A game for your desktop, a robot with a controller, and one invisible character
Version 1.6 went out tonight. Koonsultancy can now be downloaded for Windows and Linux: the first step towards Steam.
Koonsultancy (automatisch)
Why install a game that already runs in your browser?
Because the next stop is Steam. The goal is Steam Next Fest in February 2027, and Steam wants a game you install, not a web page. The game itself does not change for it. The app is a window around exactly the same code you play on itch.io and at koonsultancy.com/speel: same cards, same seeds, same Evil Corp. It starts fullscreen, it has a proper Quit button, and your progress is stored on your own computer, as plain files that Steam Cloud can carry between machines later. On itch.io there are now two downloads next to the browser version, one for Windows and one for Linux.
A robot that only owns a controller.
A Steam Deck has no mouse. So there is now a test that plays the game at Steam Deck resolution with nothing but a simulated controller: d-pad, A, B, X and Y. It plays a full run as Platinum Partner, two rounds and 42 sprints, and on every screen and in every window it reports anything that only a mouse can reach. It found five things. Between rounds you could not renew certifications. The sound and music sliders did not move. The tips for beginners could not be dismissed. You could not type in the custom seed field. And a few labels were just under readable on a seven-inch screen. All five are fixed, which also helps anyone playing in the browser with a keyboard or a controller.
The bug that only existed on Windows.
The best moment came right before release. The Windows version built without a single complaint, and did not start. The cause was one invisible character. Windows ends a line with two characters, Linux with one. The app checks the game with a fingerprint before running it, and that fingerprint had been taken of the text with Windows line endings. The browser reads the same text with plain line endings, gets a different fingerprint, and politely refuses to run a game it does not recognise. The new test that launches the app on Windows caught it an hour before publication. The fingerprint now always uses plain line endings, and the downloads you get tonight are the fixed ones.
Smaller things.
Steam achievements are ready and waiting: every unlock in the game becomes one as soon as Koonsultancy is on Steam, including the ones you earned before. One English text was wrong. The Green screen theme asked for one round, while the game waits for twenty. It now says twenty. On first launch Windows may show a blue warning, because the app is not signed yet: choose "More info", then "Run anyway". There is no Mac version; on a Mac the browser version works as before. To take your progress along, use "Copy profile" in the browser and "Restore profile" in the app.
A game that now installs, a robot that plays it without ever touching a mouse, and one character nobody could see holding up the whole release. In this industry, that is called a go-live.
